Levels Of Occupation in DAMA

2 June 2022

Under the GV DAMA, there is an extensive list of occupations that are outlined and approved for those who to sponsor a skilled or semi-skilled overseas worker

These are listed and categorised based on the skills, qualifications, experience and employment background relevant to the occupation – and has been approved under ANZSCO requirements

In this blog, we’ll explore the skills assessment process that takes place for all potential occupants to qualify for a certain position, whilst also delineating the 3 tiers of skill level that compose the list of occupations approved under the DAMA.

Skills Assessment

Skills and qualifications are assessed by a relevant Skills Assessing Authority as being at least equivalent to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

This means that the occupant will need to demonstrate that he or she has the skills that are necessary to perform the tasks of the nominated occupation. This is done via a skills assessment conducted by an independent Skills Assessing Authority.

Work experience must be certified by the Designated Area Representative as being genuine and relevant to the occupation, in order to assist the decision as to whether the visa applicant has the necessary employment background for the position.

ANZSCO Skill Level 1 – 3 Occupations

Skill level 1-3 occupations include positions like accountant (level 1), mechanical engineering technician (level 2), and roof plumber (level 3).  These are considered skilled occupations.

Any nomination for these occupations, or any application for a TSS, SESR or ENS visa connected with these occupations, must satisfy the skills, qualifications, experience and employment background required under the standard TSS, SESR or ENS visa programs, unless:

  • they have a relevant AQF qualification obtained in Australia
  • only 1 year of relevant work experience (38 hours per week) is required for the TSS visa program
  • Only 2 years of relevant work experience (38 hours per week) as per required for the SESR visa program
